Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow


Is it just me, or is it fun to create something different from otherwise ordinary ingredients? Plain Jell-o won't do it for me, we must cut out shapes. And just Rice Krispie treats won't work either, we must instead use food coloring then mold them into pumpkins or turkeys!  So, when I saw this idea, I thought, "Now, there's an activity we can have a good time with!"

Last year was my first October in Georgia, and I was still growing accustomed to the traditions of the South....the warmer weather, the SEC mania, the grits (okay, I'm still not used to those!). So imagine my surprise when my doorbell rang around 9 pm one night, and when I opened my door, all I found was a goodie bag filled with treats and a sign that said "You've Been Boo'ed!" I've been what?

Using the principles of flight and motion participants in "Rocket Works", presented by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS), will design, create and launch their own paper rockets.

The Street Fair in October will feature "TASTE OF THE SOUTHWEST” with food from the Buffalo Rose, El Dorado Mexican Restaurant, D’Deli, Three Tomatoes Steakhouse & Club at Fossil Trace. The Golden Hotel Bridgewater Grill and Local Market Deli will also be serving great food for only $3.00. Coors Beer products will be available too. Live music by “Circlin the Drain”and family friendly entertainment will be available all night. housands of pumpkins will be ripe for the picking in the 10-acre pumpkin patch.  Many activities will surround the search for that perfect jack o’ lantern, including FREE amusement rides, pony rides and live music by Della. Kids will enjoy the Children’s Activity Tent, which will be filled with fun arts and crafts, free face painting and educational activities. Visitors can also experience magic shows by the Harvest Faerie, antique tractor displays and much more. A variety of vendors will be selling tasty treats and craft and educational vendors will be onsite. Meet the mascots, “Supermascot Rocky”, “Digger”, "Bernie" at Pumpkin Festival on Saturday at noon!

Saturday, October 8 - Harvest Festival

In the late 1860s, families gathered together to help with the fall harvest and to share in the celebration of a successful crop! . We have a great crop of pumpkins, planted by the historic site interpreters which will be for sale during the festival. Our neighbors are bringing their mules for wagon rides. Join the historic site interpreters and volunteers on the 1860s farm where they will be roasting a pig in the summer kitchen and there will be a straw bale maze out in the field to challenge you. New this year will be activities on the 1890s farm; the interpretive staff and volunteers will be presenting the first ever mock county fair; midway games; and a medicine man show featuring Dr. Charles Tan, Medicine Man.

Saturday, October 8 - Dinosaur Discovery Day: National Fossil & Astronomy Day

Join the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge for the National Fossil Day celebration. Guides will be stationed at the world-famous track site and other fossil sites on the Dinosaur Ridge Trail. At the Visitor Center activities include free admission to Trek Through Time, a fossil identification table manned by paleontologists, the Allosaurus boulder, the life-size Iguanodon, a dinosaur dig for kids, sifting for microfossils, fossil prepping, and dinosaur track painting with a free track to take home. Several other activities and booths will be available including gold panning, solar observing, searching for iron meteorites, and telling time with a sundial. Register for door prizes and try the scavenger hunt.

Let the Babies Boogie!
It is Sunday afternoon and the kids are restless. What do you do? We know a place, the perfect location, in Old Town Arvada on Grandview Avenue called the D Note. Every Sunday the kids, from 1 month to 12 years old, come and enjoy music, both by listening to it, playing it and dancing to it. Parents relax at their tables, watching the kids dance and play together - great entertainment in and of itself. The children make new friends and greet some old ones. Some even make this a weekly gathering spot.

Wednesday, October 12 - Hunters Full Moon Hike

The darkness of night provides a unique backdrop for a hiking adventure. So leave those flashlights at home and hone your night vision as a park naturalist guides you along the trails of Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park and surrounding green spaces. These hikes are designed for the whole family, but keep in mind each one will average an hour and a half of walking and observing. And don’t forget to dress appropriately and wear appropriate shoes for Colorado’s everchanging weather. No dogs please.

The sale is huge, the impact is even bigger! This event generates thousands of dollars of financial resources that the Action Center is able to turn back into food, shelter and much more for our neighbors in need. People flock from all over, even out of state, to shop the Beautiful Junk Sale. ABOUT THE ACTION CENTER Annually, the Action Center provides assistance to more than 28,000 Jefferson County residents. Services to the community include a food pantry, clothing bank, 22-bed homeless shelter, transportation, utility assistance and much more. With the help of more than 2,900 yearly, the Action Center gives help, provides hope and builds dignity while breaking the cycle of poverty.

Join our annual family-friendly, non-scary Halloween festival.  Enjoy a guided hike through the forest, make a craft, listen to storytellers, visit nature center exhibits, and much more.  .  Guided hikes will leave every 10 minutes from the Nature Center.  All other activities are ongoing.  Event will be held rain or shine.  Please bring your own mugs for hot chocolate.
