New Year's can bring about mixed emotions for me.  Realizing how fast time is passing by and how quickly my babies are growing up and then there is also the hope and excitement of what the new year has in store for us.

New Year's Poppers


A Craft Filled With Fun

Make these fun New Year's Poppers filled with fun! I love making these in my house!

Here's what you need:

  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • any festive wrapping paper or tissue paper
  • curling ribbon
  • scissors or craft knife
  • tape
  • Candy, trinkets, Mardi Gras beads, crayons, anything to fill up the poppers

Start by measuring out enough wrapping paper to cover the roll but also leave extra on the ends to tie up with ribbon. (see photo) Next, cut the roll in half almost completely, but leave a small area ...

New Years Eve has long been a night for dressing up, hitting the town to the hottest place out there, unfortunately, paying double at some of those spots. Come watch as Chinese calligrapher Yunn Pann paints different Chinese characters with ink. Explore the beauty of China throughout the museum. Watch dramatic dance and martial arts performances, learn secrets of the silkworm, and watch a calligraphy demonstration. This programming complements the exhibitions Xu Beihong: Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting and Threads of Heaven: Silken Legacy of China's Last Dynasty.

Sunday, January 1 - Chatfield State Park - First Day Hike

This easy 3- mile Winter Wonderland Hike will start the Gravel Ponds and go south to the Audubon Discovery Center. Join naturalist Carolyn Bredenberg and Charlie Schmucker for a First Day Hike that will explore the park's winter landscape.

Explore the Platte River valley and learn about plants. This 2-3 mile moderate Winter Weeds Hike will go south along the Platte river and then loop back on higher ground. Join native plant expert volunteer Pam and Craig Little for a First Day Hike that will explore the park's winter weeds along the Platter River valley.

Let the Babies Boogie!
It is Sunday afternoon and the kids are restless. What do you do? We know a place, the perfect location, in Old Town Arvada on Grandview Avenue called the D Note. Every Sunday the kids, from 1 month to 12 years old, come and enjoy music, both by listening to it, playing it and dancing to it. Parents relax at their tables, watching the kids dance and play together - great entertainment in and of itself. The children make new friends and greet some old ones. Some even make this a weekly gathering spot.

The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Monday, January 9 - Stick Horse Rodeo

Join us for a wild good time! Little cowboys and cowgirls can strap on hats, chaps and bandanas and saddle up for the Stick Horse Rodeo.

The action gets wild and woolly when the bucking chute flies open and the kids come spinning out on stick horses from the National Western’s string of surly rodeo broncs. Traditional “rough stock” events include bronc and bull riding. For the more refined cowhands there will be steer roping, pole bending and barrel racing. The contestants may be pint-sized, but this crowd-pleasing shindig serves up full-sized excitement for everyone.
