Setting Bright Kids up for Lifelong Success

The International Baccalaureate Program at Mackintosh Academy Littleton

By Sponsored Content June 15, 2017

At Mackintosh Academy, a preK-8th grade school in Littleton, we nurture bright students who go on to become active, engaged citizens of the world. We teach not only book smarts, but instruct students in the life skills they need to be successful in today’s rapidly changing landscape. From preschoolers to teens, our International Baccalareate (IB) students are not only academically competent, but take action to succeed in and contribute to their communities.

Part of the Process

Mackintosh’s inquiry-based IB classrooms encourage students to ask questions, reflect, and share ideas. Students don’t passively sit and absorb information — they are part of the process. Our teachers respond to students’ needs, questions, and interests. Students are a vital force within our active, hands-on IB classrooms.

Turns the “So What?” question into “Now What?”

Our IB students ask what they can do to act based on what they are learning. Students need more than “book smarts” – they need to empathize with others, connect, build relationships, and put facts and figures to use. They need to make the intellectual leaps to bridge difficult concepts. The IB program is designed to stimulate students to make these leaps and forge connections. Students begin to see themselves as a part of the world and agents for change.

Learn and Use Skills Needed in the 21st Century Workplace

IB students learn and improve key life skills. Our IB graduates earn praise for their ability to write well, speak confidently in front of others, and comprehend key ideas and nuances in texts. They can manage their time, materials, and space. They ask critical, thoughtful questions. They empathize, connect, and collaborate with others. They have the skills to turn their knowledge into productive action, successful careers, and meaningful relationships.

World Citizen Character Compass

Mackintosh IB students embody qualities to aspire to. IB students are expected to be:

* Caring

* Communicators

* Thinkers

* Open-minded

* Inquirers

* Mindful/reflective

* Principled

* Balanced

* Risk-takers/courageous

* Resilient

* Knowledgeable

We don’t just post these attributes on classroom walls, hoping that students will magically absorb them. Our master IB staff teach these characteristic and discussing and reflecting on them in writing is part of students’ daily practice. The IB profile adds up to lifelong student success!
