Why Would I Want to Work with an Herbalist?

By Lisa Akers, Herbalist & Autoimmune Specialist September 8, 2017

It’s a question I hear often. We’re trained to use the medical resources that are in our neighborhoods. We have medical insurance, regular checkups, and specialists on call for tough cases.

They are amazing resources. If you have a broken bone, infection, cancer, or a heart attack, the first place I’d go is to a medical professional. I am grateful we have this technology readily available in our communities.

But what happens when you don’t have a serious or urgent concern? What happens when you have headaches every day with no apparent cause? What do you do when you’re so tired you can hardly function, but with enough coffee you can push through the day? Who do you see when you have embarrassing gas and diarrhea that makes you seek out the least popular restroom at the office? Is there someone you can see when you hurt all over and nothing seems to help?

You may have spoken with your doctor about your concerns and felt their approach was more about giving you a pill to suppress the symptoms than to really return to balance. You would really like to know what is going on. You want to be empowered to care for yourself, but you don’t know where to start or what to do.

Enter your herbalist.

As an herbalist, I’m looking for the root cause of your symptoms. What’s really causing your headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems? Let’s fix that instead of covering up symptoms. I look at you as a whole and complete being, recognizing that what you do to affect one area can have rebound impacts in another.

This is the health education we didn’t get in school. It’s the information you need to own your health, to know what your body needs to be healthy. It’s about finding your personal balance point where you have the energy to do the things you want to do, the time to engage in restorative self care, and the lightness of spirit that brings fulfillment and happiness.

Herbalists are the health professional that you didn’t know you needed. The person who can teach you how your body works and how your diet, lifestyle, and environment affect your health so you can make better choices and find your own balance. Herbalists been teaching people how to be healthy since the beginning of people.

My approach is to see where you’re out of balance – maybe nutrients, maybe food intolerance, maybe sleep or exercise issues. Then, we gently nudge your body back into balance with foods, herbs, and lifestyle updates. It’s about adding new, healthier habits, not about depriving yourself of the foods and activities you love. For every shift, I teach you the reasons why we’re shifting. I believe that you’re brilliant enough to understand how your body works, and when you understand, you make choices that support your health.
