MKAOK Day

By Christen Reiner, Macaroni Kid Lakewood-Littleton Editor and Publisher September 14, 2017

Random Acts of Kindness Day originally started in New Zealand and is Internationally celebrated on September 1st.

National Macaroni Kid will be celebrating their Acts of Kindness Day on Saturday, September 16th and Macaroni Publishers will be hosting various events in honor of their Macaroni Kid Act of Kindness Day.  So what will we be doing here in Lakewood-Littleton?

We are SUPER excited to kick off our "Kindness Rocks in Lakewood-Littleton" project this Saturday, and YOU can join the fun!

Have you come across a painted rock with a message about kindness in a place you least expected it?  If you haven't seen one yet, it's time to open your eyes and look at your surroundings, because painted rocks will begin to pop up all over the Lakewood and Littleton communities. These rocks are Kindness Rocks, and the purpose is pretty simple...to spread kindness around our community. These rocks have been painted by kids, moms, dads, grandparents and all members of our community with one important message to be shared...Kindness.

#KindnessRocksLakewoodLittleton

We teach our kids to be kind through various lessons throughout their childhood. We know that the best way to instill a trait as important as kindness through the actions we as take each and every day. It really doesn't take much to be kind and it can make the world of difference to the people we touch.

I came across The Kindness Rocks Project via our very own Evergreen-Bailey-Conifer Publisher, Julie! When I learned of what she was doing with her family and the members of her community, I immediately knew this was something the Lakewood and Littleton communities would embrace, too. I did some research on Megan Murphy, the founder of The Kindness Rocks Project, and found out about the history of the project and her hopes and dreams for its future.

What is The Kindness Rocks Project?

It's quite simple really. We will be decorating river rocks and adding messages of kindness, then sealing them to protect from the elements and placing them throughout the community for others to find them. Rocks can also be given to friends, family members or anyone who could use a little love and kindness. Eventually, Macaroni Kid will be hosting free Kindness Rocks painting events all over our community. Rocks will be labeled with #thekindnessrocksproject and our local #KindessRocksinLakewoodLittleton. Be sure to take pictures of rocks you have painted, rocks you find in and around the community, at events kindness rocks gardens and more. Post on social media using the hashtags so we can find them!

How can I participate in MKAOK Day this weekend, you ask?

It's easy!

  • Find any smooth rock.
  • Paint it with non-toxic paint or spraypaint.
  • Write a message of kindness on it in oil-based Sharpie or paint. On the back, include the hashtags:
    • #KindnessRocksLakewoodLittleton
    • #MKAOK
    • #TheKindnessRocksProject

  • Seal the rock with a weather proof sealant.

And....here's the BEST part....

😁😁😁 Leave your rock on a neighbor's doorstep or garden, along a hiking trail, at your school, in a grocery cart, or anywhere else that you think it will be seen and spread kindness! Post a picture on Social Media using the hashtags above!

Let's see how many Kindness Rocks we can get out into our community this weekend!

I'll be painting rocks with my kids this Saturday, using this awesome Rock Painting Kit from Creativity for Kids (Faber-Castell). It has everything we will need to start spreading the kindness!
