November is Lung Cancer Awareness month. Did you know that lung cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed among both men and women? According to the American Cancer Society, more people die of lung cancer each year than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Smoking and secondhand smoke are the main causes of lung cancer.

So, what can you do to decrease your risk? The best thing you can do is to never start smoking, quit smoking if you currently smoke, and limit your exposure to secondhand smoke. If you currently smoke, why quit now? Because your risk of lung cancer drops with every year you have stopped smoking.

What is a Lung Cancer Screening? Lung cancer is often found at later stages of disease when it is more difficult to treat. That is why early detection of lung cancer is key to providing the best possible outcome for a lung cancer diagnosis. It’s important to find a Lung Cancer screenings program offered to at risk members of the community. This screening is an annual low dose chest CT done with the goal of catching lung cancer early.
