A Note From Your Publisher: The one about wisdom nubbins 📝

By Christen Reiner, Macaroni KID Lakewood-Littleton & Macaroni KID Denver Editor and Publisher February 3, 2024

It's Dental Health Month, and that means that it's time for my annual unsolicited advice to my fellow parents.

Hey Mac Families,

I 100% know that you are asking yourself, "What the heck is a nubbin?" right now. Or maybe you know what a nubbin is, but you are not quite sure how it relates to wisdom.

Let me explain.

We waited to get my oldest son's wisdom teeth out until he was 18, right after he graduated from high school. This timing was less our choice, and more the scheduling nightmares of a high school senior. And the timing just stunk, all around. He wanted to spend his time enjoying his summer with friends before they all left for college, not recovering from wisdom teeth removal.

But worse than the timing was the fact that those wisdom teeth had grown roots. They were deadset on sticking around in their comfy little gum-home, and they were not giving up that fight too easily. My son's recovery was better than mine 20 years ago, but still tougher than it needed to be.

I decided then and there that I would be getting my other kids' wisdom teeth out as soon as humanly possible.

Fast forward to my 15 year old daughter. She had x-rays done at her last dental appointment and I saw those little suckers right away. THE WISDOM TEETH HAD ARRIVED.

I wasted no time setting up a consult with the oral surgeon. I was on a mission, I tell ya.

Y'all, my girl did not have wisdom teeth in her mouth. She had wisdom nubbins. And here is your explanation:

Her wisdom teeth are fully grown BUT have not developed roots. This means that this is the EXACT perfect time to rip them out of her head.... errrr, I mean have them gently extracted.

I don't give unsolicited advice very often but hear me now, my peeps. Keep an eye out for those wisdom teeth starting around age 13. Don't be shy about asking your dentist if they are in and run to see the oral surgeon when they are. DO NOT listen to anyone that tells you to wait until they are older. If your kid has wisdom nubbins, you (and they) are one of lucky ones and you both have hit the wisdom teeth jackpot.

I'll fill you in on how it goes in my next Note From Your Publisher. Yup. Those wisdom nubbins are coming out next week.

Peace ☮️, Love ❤️, & Macaroni 🌼,

Christen
