Hey Mac Families,
Did you know?
I bet you are thinking, "Did I know WHAT?"
Welcome to the Did You Know Edition of your Note from the Publisher! I am often asked questions about Macaroni Kid (and me!). I think the answers are pretty interesting, so I thought you just might, too. Check out some of my favorites, and get to know us a little better!
What kind of food do you serve in your restaurant?
My all-time favorite question. Obviously, this one is meant for Macaroni Grill. Depending on my level of feistiness when I receive it, I maaaay or may not answer this one with the most disgusting food options I can think of. It always gets a good laugh.
Why is it called Macaroni Kid?
Our founders, Joyce Shulman and Eric Cohen, came up with the name Macaroni Kid because they had young kiddos at the time who loved macaroni and cheese. They called them "macaroni kids".
Is being Macaroni Kid publisher your job or a hobby?
It is my full time job! I am a former teacher, but decided to find a job that allowed me to stay home with my kids and volunteer when they were young.
How do you decide on the content for each newsletter?
I write much of the content myself, and us Colorado publishers generously share our articles with each other as well. Highlighting local events makes for great content, so we search for ones that we think you might like to know a little bit more about. We also love to connect local businesses with our local families, so some of our content comes from our sponsors. Plus, Macaroni Kid is lucky to have about 500 publishers across the US and Canada, many of whom contribute articles to a shared database. Some content comes from them.
How do you find the giveaways that you offer?
We work with a lot of National companies and touring events through the Macaroni Kid National team, and they always love to share tickets with our amazing readers! Local businesses also enjoy the excitement that a good giveaway generates! Who doesn't love a giveaway?
Why do I sometimes get advertising emails?
Macaroni Kid is free for our readers because of the generosity of our site sponsors. Their advertising dollars also pay each publisher's salary. We choose partners and information that we think our readers will find useful, and we appreciate our readers taking the time to read those advertising emails and patronizing our local and national partners!
Do Macaroni Kid publishers get "work perks"?
Yup! I am often given tickets to take my family to events and local businesses to check out what they are all about. This perk is an amazing gift to my whole family. Mac Kid publishers are also sometimes invited to take trips with other publishers. I visited Mexico a couple of summers ago and got to bond with many publishers from all over the US and Canada. It was an unforgettable trip!
Do your kids like being your models?
They are usually very willing to pose and are actually super helpful. They are all pretty dang good photographers, too -- they know just the right angles to shoot! If they are opposed to modeling for me at anytime, I respect that... but that doesn't happen very often. They usually have fun during the photo shoots!
Do you actually like the products that you review?
I really do! You'd probably be surprised to know that our National Partners are grateful for our feedback, whether it is positive or negative. If a product doesn't review well, they want to know why so they can improve the experience. It's important that we write honest reviews so that our readers can trust our recommendations.
What is your favorite part of being a Mac Kid publisher?
I love knowing that what I work so hard to do is helpful to local families and local businesses. I get excited when I find something to share with all of you! I enjoy writing, and feel like my "voice" comes through, so when you all read my work, you are truly getting to know me. But my absolute FAVORITE PART is when someone recognizes me when I'm out and about, and I get to meet a reader spontaneously. It totally makes my day.
