A Note From Your Publisher: The one about (ugh) getting organized 📝

By Christen Reiner, Macaroni KID Lakewood-Littleton & Macaroni KID Denver Editor and Publisher December 7, 2024

Hey Mac Families,

I have been wanting to organize my house for years. The holiday season always gives me a reason to jumpstart the clutter clearing as we get ready to bring new items into our house.

If you have ever tried to organize your house, you know that it gets far worse before it gets better. And that any organizational project takes at least a thousand hours to complete. Okay, maybe more like six. But definitely NOT one.

So what parent on the planet has that kind of time to dedicate day after day to get it done? Not this one.

But I really got a bee in my bonnet, and I really wanted to try to make some sense of the piles that have grown over the years. You know, the memories, the extra gifts, the stuff that doesn't really have a home or the stuff that won't leave the party and go home. That stuff.

Part of my problem is that I'm frugal and I'm sentimental. I am the mom that kept my kids' umbilical stump after it fell off. (Gross, I know.) Do I know where said cords are now? Nope. I'll come across them sometime after my kids have all moved out and think, Why on Earth did I keep this nasty thing? But, like I mentioned, I'm sentimental. I can't help it. Throw in the fact that I'm terrified that the second I get rid of something, I will want to use it, and I will be so mad that I have to buy it again, and well... here we are.

HOWEVER....

Apparently there comes a point where you just get so sick of the piles that you start to get harsh about purging. That's where I am now. I'm getting rid of stuff like I have to carry around what I keep. Clothes? Gone. Magazines I swore I would read? Gone. 20 year old kitchen utensils? Gone.

So, I'm getting better. And the piles are getting smaller. And those things that refused to leave the party? I'm kicking them out.

But there are a few things that I HATE about organizing, and you know how I love to share a list.

  • It's overwhelming to go through a pile. Where do I start? WHERE SHOULD IT ALL GO?
  • I do not want to sit on the floor for hours, but that's the easiest way to organize, unless you have a gigantic table. And I don't.
  • There is always SOMETHING in each pile that doesn't really have a home, but you can't get rid of it.
  • Inevitably, you have to pack up the organization before it is totally done, just to get your living room back for the evening. And start over the next day.
  • I want to get it done, but I'm sick of doing it.

I'd rather clean 10 toilets than organize, but it does feel pretty good every time that I drop off a donation. So I guess there's that.

Anybody feel like organizing my house? No? I don't blame you.

Peace ☮️, Love ❤️, & Macaroni 🌼,

Christen
