Hey Mac Families,
I have wanted a new kitchen table for years. We have had our current table for over 20 years, and although we still like it, it has seen better days.
When I was growing up, my family found a second hand laminate table that is still in perfect shape, all these years later. My goal was to find one of those beauties for myself. Not only does it wipe down perfectly clean every time, it doesn't fade, or peel, or stain. I wish I had thought to get one when my own kids were little. Maybe then we wouldn't have baby food still jammed in every nook and cranny of our fancy table (ya know, the one that has seen better days).
I searched and searched on Facebook Marketplace for the table of my dreams, just like the one at my parents' house. For months, I looked with no luck.
Then, I found it. It wasn't a laminate table just like the one at my parents' house. It was even better.
I found a 1950's diner table with diner chairs!
Yes, it is laminate, so it has the features that I wanted. PLUS, it is stinking adorable!
And it is currently sitting in my living room. Ummmm, what?
Remember that 20+ year old table that has seen better days? I am finding it difficult to replace it. My kids grew up at that table. It was the first piece of furniture we bought for our first house. That table that has seen better days has also seen a lot of days.
Don't worry, I'll get there. And I will love that new (to me) diner table and chairs.
(But, I might take the old one apart and put it in the basement for awhile, just in case.)
Peace ☮️, Love ❤️, & Macaroni 🌼,
Christen
UPDATE | September 27, 2024
This Note was written on October 1, 2022. I saw that old table today and thought it would be fun to update you all on what happened to it. Did I put it in the basement? Did I ever switch to the diner table?
Welllllll...
Yes. Eventually.
The diner table stayed in my living room until May of 2023. Ummmmm, what? I know, I know. Here's why.
During Christmas break, we set up a puzzle on the diner table. We had so much fun hanging out at the table, listening to Christmas music, and watching Christmas movies. We stayed up late together. We laughed. We told stories. It was awesome.
Then, Christmas was over and I figured it was time to switch the tables out.
But my youngest started doing homework on the diner table and I loved having him there to chat about the day while he tackled his assignments.
Then, after Spring Break, he started doing his homework in his room, and I figured it was time to switch the tables out.
But I got sentimental about the old table again, and was struggling with the thought of giving away the table that all of my babies sat at.
So, the old table stayed. And the diner table sat in the living room.
Then, my oldest said that he needed a kitchen table for the house he was living in. He happened to be in Littleton for his sister's graduation, my parents were in town to help us move it, and he had his truck with him. It was the perfect storm, so to speak.
So we loaded up that old table, and we loaded up those old chairs. And I sent them to live with my first baby at his house.
Fast forward about a year and a half. My daughter has moved into that house with her brother, where that old table lives now. That old table allows my two kids and their roomies to gather for meals, homework sessions, game nights, and Lego building marathons. It has stickers on it and it is always piled with fast food napkins and sauce packets.
We are in their town for Homecoming, and I sat at that old table for a bit tonight. I smiled at the thought of that 24 year old table being there for my family all those years.
So yes, the diner table eventually moved into its new spot in my dining room. And I love it. But that old table will always hold a special place in my heart, just like the memories.
