10 Tips for Parents | Surviving the Daylight Saving Time Change

By Christen Reiner, Macaroni KID Lakewood-Littleton & Macaroni KID Denver Editor and Publisher November 5, 2022

This Saturday night, we will be "falling back' for Daylight Saving. Here are my ten favorite tips for surviving the time change if you have young children.

  1. Cover ALL clocks in your house and car immediately.
  2. Stock up on your favorite caffeinated beverages. And chocolate. And tissues. Because you will likely cry at some point on Sunday.
  3. Invest in a good set of black out curtains for your kiddo's room.
  4. Figure out how to change the clock on your microwave and in your car now. You will need to adjust the time daily, depending on your mood and exhaustion level.
  5. Work on your game face now. You WILL need to lie about what time it actually is when you put your kids to bed at 6pm.
  6. Learn to be okay with lying to your kids. (See #5.)
  7. Stock up on easy indoor witching hour activities. Witching hour is the time between 4pm and 7pm, which will now be in complete darkness outside.
  8. DO NOT.... I repeat, DO NOT talk to anyone who does not have young children on Sunday or Monday. They will 100% gloat about the extra hour of sleep they got and you will lose your bleep. Guaranteed.
  9. Place a bowl of your child's favorite treats by their bed when you change the clocks on Saturday night. That should definitely buy you that extra hour of peace in the morning that you deserve.
  10. Send the kids to grandma's until Tuesday or Wednesday. Trust me.
