Create Your Own Eclipse with the Help of Denver's Museum of Illusions

April 6, 2024

As the cosmos align and the celestial ballet unfolds, there's nothing quite as mesmerizing as a solar eclipse. However, witnessing this awe-inspiring event isn't feasible in parts of the Denver metro. In fact, most will likely see only around 65% of the total eclipse

But fear not! By following the steps outlined below, you can craft your very own eclipse right in the comfort of your home with the help of the Museum of Illusions.

How do they DO that? Denver’s Museum of Illusions, located on the 16th Street Mall, is a MUST SEE. This cutting-edge experience takes visitors on a journey through optical wizardry, astonishing holograms and brainiac-approved exhibits in its over 6,200 square-foot space. Guests of all ages are welcome to step into a world where math, science and art collide in interactive exhibits that will have everyone questioning reality itself.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

  • A flashlight or a small LED light
  • A round object such as a ball or a small globe
  • A flat surface or wall
  • Tape or a sturdy stand to secure your round object in place
  • Optional: colored cellophane or markers for added visual effects

Step 2: Set the Stage

Choose a suitable location where you can control the lighting conditions. A room with minimal ambient light works best for creating a striking illusion. Set up your flat surface or wall as your canvas for the eclipse projection. Secure your round object in place using tape or a sturdy stand, ensuring it doesn't move during the illusion.

Step 3: Position Your Light Source

Place your flashlight or LED light source at a distance from the round object, angling it so that the light shines directly onto the surface. Experiment with different distances and angles to achieve the desired effect. For a more dramatic illusion, you can use colored cellophane or markers to tint the light.

Step 4: Witness the Eclipse Unfold

With everything in place, dim the surrounding lights and switch on your light source. As the light shines onto the round object, it will cast a shadow onto the surface, creating a captivating eclipse illusion. Adjust the positioning and intensity of the light to simulate the phases of a solar eclipse, from partial to total and back again.

Step 5: Capture the Moment

Don't forget to document your illusion eclipse experience! Grab your camera or smartphone and snap photos or videos of the mesmerizing spectacle. Share your creation with friends and family or even on social media to inspire others to embark on their own cosmic journey.
