As kids are settling into summer break, Generation Wild is reminding parents that outdoor play can be fun and easy all summer long - and is important now more than ever. Even better? Generation Wild makes it easy to play with ideas from its 100 Things To Do Before You’re 12 List, including:
- Identify animals by their tracks
- Make a pinecone bird feeder
- Find shapes in the clouds
- Imitate a bird’s call
- Make a fairy garden
- Play hopscotch
- Press flowers in a book
Coming off of their successful Wilderflower initiative, which distributed more than 120,000 native wildflower seed packets across the state, Generation Wild is also encouraging kids and families to foster the growth of these flowers, which improve ecosystems for our pollinator friends. Gardening teaches lessons in nurturing and patience, helping children develop self-control, resist immediate rewards and focus on long-term goals.
With recent studies finding that kids spend an average of just 7 minutes outside a day, and a growing parental awareness of screen time risks, Generation Wild aims to provide alternate solutions for parents to do with their kids outdoors.
ABOUT GENERATION WILD
Generation Wild was created by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) to connect Colorado kids to the outdoors by increasing the amount of time they spend outside. The program is made up of a statewide communications campaign designed to inspire and activate Colorado families using tools like a list of 100 Things To Do Before You’re 12, and a network of 12 Generation Wild communities engaging more than 270,000 youth participants with outdoor programs, activities and jobs in the outdoors. Generation Wild has become a leader in the outdoor movement by executing several statewide initiatives such as Say Hi with a Snowman, Wilderflowers™, World's Longest Hopscotch, and Wilder, the film. #GenerationWild #WonderFullWorld
