May is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Better Hearing and Speech Month, making it the perfect time to highlight the important connection between communication and emotional well-being for all children.
Communication plays a central role in how children connect, learn, and regulate emotions. When children can express their needs, share their thoughts, and connect with others, they often feel more confident and secure. When communication is challenging, frustration can increase. This may show up as behavior challenges, withdrawal, difficulty with transitions, or challenges connecting with peers.
Communication differences can occur for many reasons. Some children may be late talkers, while others may have difficulty understanding language, expressing their ideas, or engaging socially. Children with autism may also experience communication differences, which are often one of the earliest signs families notice. Regardless of the reason, when children are supported in developing communication — in whatever way works best for them — confidence grows, frustration decreases, and emotional regulation improves.
Communication Is More Than Words
At Handprints Therapies, we believe communication is about more than speech. Communication can include words, gestures, pictures, sign language, facial expressions, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Every child communicates differently, and every voice deserves support.
Our speech-language pathologists work with children across a wide range of communication needs, including late talkers, language delays, social communication differences, and autism. Therapy is play-based, child-led, and designed to feel natural and engaging. Some children develop verbal communication, while others may use AAC devices or visual supports. Both are meaningful and effective ways to communicate.

Why an Interdisciplinary Approach Matters
Children develop communication, movement, learning, and emotional regulation skills simultaneously — not separately. That is why collaboration is so important.
At Handprints Therapies, our interdisciplinary team includes ABA, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. When professionals work together, children benefit from consistent strategies, shared goals, and coordinated care. This collaborative approach helps support the whole child and creates more meaningful outcomes.
Every Voice Matters
When children feel understood, their world opens up. Relationships grow, independence increases, and learning becomes more accessible.
This May, as we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month and Better Hearing and Speech Month, we celebrate every child’s unique voice. Because communication is not just about speaking — it is about connection, confidence, and well-being.
Every child deserves to be heard. Every voice matters.
